So much to do..So little time...to blog

Hey here's an idea..why don't I talk about events coming up, rather than waiting until they're over.
For instance, Free Comic Book Day.
It's only 11 days away, and I still haven't mentioned the sale.
Yes, I've noticed that most stores do some kind of sale during FCBD, and I figured I should do the same.
Nothing super special, just a little enticement to part you all from some of your cash when you're in picking up your freebies.
We'll be setting the back table up with some of the best of our kids and all-ages stuff, and if the weather is agreeable, we'll have some boxes of comics outside full of 50 cent comics.
And best of all, SATURDAY MAY 1st, all paperbacks will be
20 % off.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - APRIL 21st

Another big week, but this close to FREE COMIC DAY, its expected that the publishers would be in a hurry to fill up our shelves.
Girl month is still going strong with Marvel adding 3 more titles. Sif #1 follows Thor's love interest in her solo adventures and Her-oes #1 is an all-ages title featuring Marvels super girls all attending high school together. Firestar is a one-shot featuring Spidys amazing friend.
DC meanwhile restarts the Spirit with a new #1, and features a B&W back-up by O'Neil and Sienkiewicz.

So much to do, so little time

The problem with setting up so many projects at once, is when I don't have enough time to talk about them all. I do need to apologize for the odd hours (and early closings)at the store the last month or so as we were hard pressed to get things done in the times allotted occasionally.

First off, I've put off talking about the Wizard Comic-con so long, it's old news now.
Over-all we did pretty well at the show(after a horribly slow Friday). It was great to see so many unfamiliar faces. The crowd seemed to be a lot of families out for a look see rather than the usual comic hunting gang. I'll definitely keep an eye open for next years show, and if they can bump up the comic creator presence a little to go along with the reality show and wrestling celebrities, well, I'll probably do it again.


The Easter Weekend sale went over really well, considering it was promoted mostly last minute.
The main reason for the sale however was to clear some of the paperback shelves off to make it easier for us to work on them the rest of the weekend. Unfortunately my plans for the shelves was scuttled due to bad math on my part, so we ended up switching to plan B.


Moving the $1.00 comics to a shelving system and freeing up the center space of the store for the toys and games.

Its still not 100%, but when it is(ideally before Free Comic Book Day), we should have a much better use of the floor space, with an expanded kid's area and 2 more paperback shelves(a 20% increase). And more than twice as many "buck" books to browse through. The shelves do make it a little tougher to browse the cheap stuff comfortably, but I hope there's enough great stuff buried in there, that it will be worth the extra effort.

I just got in today from doing a graphic novel sale at local elementary school, St. Brigids.
I have to say, they have a great bunch of kids over there, and they all seem to be voracious readers. It was a little hectic at times over the day and a half, but much more rewarding than doing the usual comic convention type thing. Just to see and hear all the kids get excited over the assortment of books I took, and to actually be thanked for taking their money. I just wish I had been smart enough to take a camera and get a shot of the packed room as the kids lined up to buy during their recess and lunch yesterday and today.
I'd like to thank the school librarian, Mrs. Zaleski-Cox, for all the work she did setting up and organizing the event, and hopefully the kids will enjoy the great new selection of graphic novels that are now a part of their library.

WHEW! Just typing all that out reminds me I haven't had a day of for a few weeks now, and we still have FREE COMIC BOOK DAY, to deal with. The first batch of this years goodies shows up tomorrow, and the process of sorting, counting and stickering the books, will be on-going right up to the day of the event, ONLY 17 DAYS and counting.

When I'll get the time to set-up and promote this summers great 23rd anniversary sale, I'll never know.

Do any of you remember a few weeks back when I mentioned how few first issues there seemed to be...and how the publishers would make up for it soon...WELL, that week is here.
20 comics are labeled with a #1 this week, not including the 3 buck book, first issues.
But the big book of the week is a #0. Brightest Day picks up where Blackest Night left off, and starts off with a big $3.99 issue, but the price drops to $2,99 for the bi-weekly series. And it comes with a FREE white lantern ring.
More Brightest Day fun as the regular Flash series starts, also comes with a FREE ring.
Doc Savage #1 starts a solo series for the Man of Bronze, he should do fine even without Batman and Spirit to back him up.
On the Marvel end of things, hopes are high for the Iron Man 2 movie, why else start a 2nd regular Iron Man title and a Black Widow solo book, weeks before the movie release. They may have had a better start if they weren't debuting the same day as 3 Siege one-shots. I guess they had to send multiple Siege issues at once, so you could see how the covers fit together poster style.

And World War Hulks kicks into high gear, as the Marvel heroes ALL HULK OUT.

Attendees at the Wizard Comic-con a few weeks back got an advance look at a great new title.

Kill Shakespeare is the brain child of a couple of local guys, and features the bards greatest heroes in battle against their literary villains. If these guys don't get too big too fast, they may still be up for the store appearance they offered to do. So buy a copy this week and get it signed later.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY-APRIL 7th

Spring is here(actually feels like we jumped right to summer),and that means April showers. And Marvel showers us with first issues, most of them Avengers comics.
The first of many arrive this week, at least these ones are mini-series. Avengers Origin promises us untold tales of the groups first meeting. We also get 3 issues of Luke Cage as he helps out a friend(this story has nothing to do with the New Avengers, despite the logo on the cover).
Shield #1 looks good, as it pokes into the secret history of the classic spy agency. Who knew that DaVinci was part of the original Shield?
World War Hulks begins, and teaser images have shown us something disturbing,as apparently all the Marvel heroes Hulk-up at some point.
Invincible Returns #1, is a one-shot special meant to catch new-comers up on the events of the current storyline. They really should have sent this the same week as the dollar comic reprint of the first issue, coming soon.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- MARCH 31st

Kinda late with this list, but the convention took up a lot of time. I'll try and post my thoughts on that later.
Looks like a nice wrap-up to the month. There were 5 Wednesdays in March so thats why we aren't loaded down like every other last week is.
Blackest Night #8 ships, bringing the biggest x-over of the year to its conclusion...until Brightest Day starts in April.
Cloak and Dagger get another shot at a solo title.(There's not much to say about these characters who start new titles every few years, you either like them already or you don't).
Sensational She-Hulk is a one-shot special, celebrating her 30th anniversary with a new story by Peter David and a reprint from John Byrne.
And 3 "BUCK" books ship together. Walking Dead is a title that is perfect for the trial offer, because once you read the first issue, you're hooked. Same with the Garth Ennis version of the Punisher.
I still don't know what they were thinking with reprinting Youngblood #1, but I ordered some for you masochists out there.

STORE HOURS

Just a note to say that due to scheduling with the Comic convention this weekend,
the store will be closing at 6:00 on Thursday and Friday, this week.
I apologize for any inconvenience this causes anyone.
And don't forget that the following weekend is Easter.
We'll be having our Good Friday, paperback sale from 12 noon - 5p.m. on the Friday and the store will be closed all day , SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONDAY for maintenance.
