One to watch: Saga (Image)

 One to watch: Saga (Image)

Two great talents in comics team up for an all-new ongoing sci-fi/fantasy epic in Saga.

Established comics writer Brian K. Vaughn
(Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina) joins forces with up-and-coming Calgary-based artist Fiona Staples (Mystery Society, North 40) in
this new, original creator-owned series for Image comics. Expect reviewers, fans and the publisher to be talking about this one in the coming months as Image celebrates 20 years in comics in 2012.

Set against the backdrop of a galactic war, Saga follows new parents Marko and Alana as they risk all fighting the odds to raise their newborn daughter in the midst of a violent struggle. The book has already stirred some controversy with its depiction of a breastfeeding on the cover, so there's bound to be extra interest once it hits shelves.

Promo material is calling this "Star Wars-style action colliding with Game of
Thrones-esque drama", so it's not like Image is building high expectations or
anything. But with Vaughn and Staples at the helm, the book could very well live up
to the hype. BKV needs little introduction. Perhaps best-known for Vertigo's highly
acclaimed Y: The Last Man, Vaughn is an Eisner award winner on Y and Ex Machina
(Wildstorm). He's also written the terrific fable The Pride of Baghdad (Vertigo) - a
story about freedom and loss set during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq - more than
three dozen issues of Runaways (Marvel), as well as a few episodes of the hit TV
series Lost.

Fiona Staples may not be as familiar to readers, but she's earned acclaim over the
past few years and a Shuster award in 2011 for her body of cover art, including a
gorgeous set of covers for DV8: Gods and Monsters (Wildstorm). If you're looking for
a primer on her work, try to find North 40 (Wildstorm) - a dark fantasy tale filled
with magic and demons.

The first issue of Saga is a whopping 44 ad-free pages at the irresistible
introductory price of $2.99. Saga is intended for an adult audience.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - FEBRUARY 15th

Heres the stuff for FEB. 15th.
If you've been buying Dark Tower and/or Locke and Key, don't miss out on
Road Rage, as Joe Hill and his dad work together on this new title.

Lots of great kids books coming all at once, as we get another batch of
the excellent young readers DC Super Pets books. Younger fans of the Tiny Titans
eat this stuff up like candy.
I just wish they could release them on more of a monthly comic type
schedule rather than a huge load all on the same day.
