NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- JANUARY 6th 2010

Well the holidays are all done with and its back to business as usual. Hope everybody out there had a great Christmas and a safe New Years.

The first week of the year looks pretty good, nice mix of stuff with a few really cool items.

One big book to mention is the Seige #1. The start of the next major Marvel x-over and the return of the big 3 at Marvel. Cap, Iron Man and Thor, are all that stand between Osborn and the world.

Punisher gets a one-shot Special, as Frank ties up some loose ends from his friend, Yorkie's death.
Its a blast from the past as DC continues their Blackest Night event with 2 titles coming back from the dead. Suicide Squad and Weird Western Tales were cancelled years(or decades) ago, but here we are with all new issues tying them into the Blackest Night. Watch for more of these "resurrected" titles in the weeks to come.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- DEC. 23rd

Well its the final shipping list for 2009.
Only 1 new comic will be on sale for the 30Th, so feel free to spend as much as you want this week.
Angel Annual ships together with the last part of the 5-parter, Only Human. Its always a little confusing when a company ships two storylines for the same character on the same day, but its never stopped Marvel or DC.
Another Blackest Night 3-parter starts, this one is the JSA, who have a lot of skeletons(or rather zombies) in their closets.

The real Cap is back(maybe) and he wants his shield back. Captain America Who Will Wield the Shield is a 1 shot that answers that question.

Chimichanga #1,tells the story of a bearded girl and.....never mind, its by Eric Powell(The Goon) that's all you need to know.
Two What If? books this week, one about the Astonishing X-Men and the other is Spider-Man House of M.
Speaking of What Ifs?, Archie marries Betty, part 5 of the future story, arrives for Christmas.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- DEC. 16th

Well the snow on the ground is a wake-up call that Christmas is only a few weeks away. Don't forget to give your loved ones a good solid hint of what you want from the comic store this year.
A lot of books this week, but not much new to really note.
If you've been enjoying Mark Waids evil "hero" story in Irredeemable, then you will want to see the other side of the coin in Incorruptible, as a bad guy goes good.
Captain America Reborn #5 finally ships. There was never any real suspense over Cap's return, especially since hes been popping up in so many of the Marvel titles the last 2 weeks,or has he?
The annual What If? specials continue with Daredevil VS.Elektra, these have been selling better than expected, I think people are just looking for the done-in-one type of story to get away from the crossover mania the big 2 have been in for the last few years.
And boy there sure are a lot of Batman comics this week.

The Toxic Avenger

I've never made a point of this, but I'm not a big fan of musicals.
I'm not sure why, but with a few exceptions, they just don't seem to appeal to me.
Well after getting to see the Toxic Avenger the Musical , last weekend, I've added 1 more to that short list. My friend Glenn and I caught the show, now playing at the Danforth Music Hall http://www.themusichall.ca/ , Saturday night and it was fantastic. Here's what Glenn had to say..

"Disclaimer: I am a fan of musicals of inappropriate themes. And bad b-movies. When it really comes to it, all plays are judged by the performances, sets, music and production. TA-Tm's actors all had great performances, with the near herculean efforts of the secondary character players (McKnight, Herbert) really impressing - it seems they were able to change characters and costumes in seconds. The set, initially a pile of barrels of glowing toxic waste, transforms into libraries, a young woman's apartment, a mad scientist's lab and more. The flow between scenes, partially shrouded in darkness, was nothing short of amazing. The set, well, if I say more, I will ruin what amounts to a show in itself.This is a rock and roll musical so it definitely had the catchy songs and rocking beats you would expect. All the songs were fun and, for the most part, funny (You have to have the serious love ballad, come on!). It also has an amazing, unusual duet that will just floor you.Production, the nuts and bolts and flow of the show - and with the costume changes mentioned earlier, the great sets, the coordination of scene switches - this was like clockwork. With the transforming set (I am giving stuff away again), costumes,effects - this showcases the skill of the people who you don't see that deserve as much acclaim as the actors themselves. And they were simply fantastic in this play.Contrary to the lady across the aisle from me with her son, it may not be the best thing for kids, but if you want to see a kids' musical, go see one. This ain't for kids!So, all the specs aside, I really enjoyed this show and would love to see it again."

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- DECEMBER 9th

DC ships a lot of Blackest Night tie-ins this week, 4 books that continue their story from last months issues. Now we'll see how many people want to read these comics when their isn't a ring attached.( Actually, this could be the first time I've increased orders on titles after an event).
Daytripper sounds like a good read, a fascinating look inside the mind of an aspiring writer.
Iron Man #21 could be an important lead-in to the Seige event starting soon (well technically it started this week with Seige Cabal), as Tony fights his way back to life to take his place in the big event that will bring Cap, Iron Man, and Thor together again,(just as all their movies should lead into an Avengers film).
Nation -X is the start of an X-Men mini-series(it's about time we got one of those), centered around the new island nation the mutants have made for themselves.
Spider-Man and the Secret Wars, gives us a new look at the classic mini-series that started the whole summer X-over event syndrome(hey we have to blame somebody).
Pilot Season Murderer is the first of a series of 1-shots from the fertile mind of Kirkman(Walking Dead and Invincible). This one is a crime fiction story about a guy with powers, and follow up issues will be in other genres such as Superhero and Sci-Fi.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- DECEMBER 2nd

Lots of first issues, all at once.
Blackest Night continues with 2 more mini-series, one for Flash and one for Wonder Woman. Both have more than a few deaths in their pasts and at least one major zombie bad-guy each.

The JSA spins off a 2nd series(it worked so well for JLA), seems like the younger heroes don't want to play with the "old" boys anymore.

The big book of the week is Seige Cabal, the lead-in to the Seige epic that will bring the big guns of the Marvel Universe back together. Only Thor, Cap and Iron Man united can hope to take down Osborn. The only one missing from this Avengers reunion is the big green guy.

Hulk is busy however in his own big crossover event as the Fall of the Hulks Alpha issue arrives the same day. Maybe the plan is to connect the two events at the end.

Marvels annual tradition of weekly What If?'s starts off with an alternate look at the Secret Invasion.

Jonah Hex hits 50,(I'd say he looks good for his age, but he's never looked good).

Hey look, the regular Thor comic is back, continuing from the story JMS set up in the Special this week and tying into the events of the Seige.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- NOVEMBER 25th

DC gets a little heavy with the Blackest Night this week as an issue of Green Lantern arrives with Blackest Night #5 and Justice League #39(the last 2 are both ring-bearing comics).
Powers #1 is the latest relaunch of the eternally late comic (I don't see why Bendis even cares about this one anymore with all his huge Marvel projects).
And speaking of late comics...the J.M.S. Thor storyline finally wraps up in the Thor giant-size Finale #1,(why do they bother with the #1 on there? It's the END of the story guys).

The first volume of Chew, the story of the detective who eats his clues, arrives this week, along with the first issue of the next storyline. This one has been the surprise hit of the year, so get 'em while they last.

Hey the Image guys(all except Jim Lee) all decided to get together and do a team-up comic. Considering how long it took most of them to get a single issue of each of their own books out...Any bets on when(or IF) the last issue of this 6-issue mini-series will ever show up.
