NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - JUNE 2ND

YES, I SAID WEDNESDAY JUNE 2ND.
There seemed to be some confusion this week that the books might be a day late due to the holiday Monday. Even more people seem to think they will be late next week due to the American holiday.
NEW COMICS ARE ON THE SHELVES ON WEDNESDAY IN CANADA.

Holidays, whether U.S. or Canadian have no effect for the foreseeable future. In fact we should be reading our comics a day earlier than the Americans a total of 5 times between now and Christmas.
That said, here's what you'll see when you come in next WEDNESDAY JUNE 2nd.

There are a lot of "new" titles to mention .
Marvel continues their Avengers launches with, Avengers Prime, this week. This one's a 5 issue mini focusing on the big 3. They've also got first issues for some other Avengers,as Hawkeye and Mockingbird team-up, and we get an "old school" Hercules by Bob Layton, set in the future.(Think Hercules Prince of Power from a decade or 2 back) By the way, Avengers Spotlight isn't a comic per se, but one of those fan-feature type things.
Heralds #1 sounds like the best of the "girl comics" so far, as the women of the Marvel Universe gather in cosmic battle. The Thanos comic from this week was just a one-shot setting up the mini-series that starts next week. (I know, confusing people is the best way to keep readers).
The Punisher Franken-castle #1, reprints the origin of Franks new look.
Meanwhile, DC gives us the Red Hood mini, as we get to see Jason Todd's return and path to evil.
Jokers Asylum:Riddler is the first of a set of one-shots featuring the Joker's version of other Bat-villains origins.
No Buffy this week, but we get a Serenity one-shot to keep the Whedon fans happy.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- MAY 26TH

A strangely quite week for the end of the month. DC ships the Mighty Crusaders special before the mini-series of the same name starts up. At least on a slower week this title might get a 2nd look. DC also ships the Wednesday Comics hrdcvr. This series was a huge hit last summer, I'm surprised that we didn't see another this year. Maybe they're waiting to see how sales of the collection go.
Marvel starts another Avengers title with the Secret Avengers. I'm looking forward to this one despite the odd cast of characters, Brubaker has not failed to entertain me yet. And, Thanos is back, and you can bet major inter-galactic war is not far behind. Also, more girl comics, with a Dazzler one-shot and Emma Frost's origin. Thunderbolts starts its new Heroic Age direction, with Luke Cage using the team to try and reform super baddies.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - MAY 19th

Well, the Dark age of the Avengers came to a close this week, so now the new Heroic Age can begin. But why does it have to begin all at once?
Avengers #1 really needs no explanation, but most of the others do. Age of Heroes seems to be an anthology of short stories by Busiek, dealing with the heroes returning to their "legal" vigilante status. Atlas #1 is the relaunch of the great Agents of Atlas title, and Marvel is hoping restarting it now will pull in more readers. Avengers Assemble is a handbook, one-shot issue. Enter the Heroic Age is another one-shot featuring 5 short intro stories leading into new on-going titles.
Marvel also has some more "girl" comics, as Pepper Potts gets a whole issue to herself in Rescue #1, and Galacta, the daughter of the planet eater gets her own book too.
Meanwhile DC starts off a few great titles too with Zatanna #1, and the newest version of the Legion of Superheroes. Also, DC Legacies looks really good as we witness the history of the DC universe through the origins of its heroes, starting with the mystery men of the '40's.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - MAY 12th

I wonder if the execs at Marvel and DC actually sit around the bar on Friday nights and plan how they can overload at least 1 week each month. Aside from the number of first issues, there's high profile stuff like the last issue of Siege.
Bruce Wayne will be coming back, (no surprise there), and this 6 parter will show us just where he's been and what he's been up to all this time.The covers for each issue fit together into a long poster of his trip through the ages.
The Birds of Prey are back, with a few additions. The newly revived Hawk and Dove join the gang. I'm sure Hank Hall will enjoy his tenure on the otherwise all girl team.
DC's second bi-weekly series begins. Justice League Generation Lost gives us Maxwell Lord, back from the dead, to take down his former teammates.
Titans Villains for Hire is a one-shot starting off the new Titans direction with Deathstoke in charge. (Sounds more like a Suicide Squad or Secret Six storyline).
Marvel gives us the wrap-up to Siege, with issue 4 shipping together with the Avengers Finale and the title only known as Fallen(I assume someone dies in it, based on the little info we get). Next month we get all the restarts for the 20 or so Avengers titles.
Prince of Power sets up Hercs little friend Cho, as his replacement.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Jeff Lemire will be in store next Wednesday May 12th from around 3:30-4:00 to sign copies of his 2 Vertigo paperbacks being released that day.

Sweet Tooth vol. 1 and The Nobody are arriving together, and if you don't feel like fighting the crowds at TCAF this weekend, you can wait and pick them up right here.

If you can't make it in at that time, drop me a note, or order your copies from the on-line store, and I'll make sure to get them signed and put them aside for you.

FCBD WRAP-UP

Well, another Free Comic Book Day has come and gone. I must say I was not expecting the crowd that turned out, but they were all more than welcome.
Previous years we've seen the stream of customers slow to a crawl as the day wore on, but not
this time. The store was filled nearly to capacity right through to closing.

In total, we gave away nearly 3,000 comics to the over 500 people who passed through the doors in that 8 hour period on Saturday.
Most impressive was the number of families who showed up together, all more than willing to pick up a few bargains along with their freebies.
Despite the less than perfect start to the day, the weather did clear up later and allowed us to move some of the buck comic bins out front. It was a necessary move as the crowd around the shelves in the store was overwhelming at times. Several customers bought as many as a 100 loose comics at the special 50cent price.
And the 20% off books offer kept my staff and helpers busy refilling the shelves.

Speaking of staff, I'd like to thank all my staff and friends who worked tirelessly to help this event move so smoothly, especially young Rob who encouraged the esteemed Cobra Commander to show up and help hand out some G.I.Joe comics. I'm not sure what some of the passers by thought when they saw him out front waving to them in their cars as they drove by, but more than a few pulled over and came in to see what the crowd was all about.
I hope everybody who came in got something they liked and enjoyed the day as much as we did.
I'd like to remind teachers and librarians to give us a week or so before coming in to pick up the school packs we promised them. It takes a while to get everything in the store back in order and up to speed.
