FANEXPO 2010

I've had a lot of people in the last few days asking me if I will be at the FANEXPO next weekend.
And of course, I answer with an enthusiastic YES! In fact I'm right up front, one of the first booths you see as you get off the escalators. (The RED square on the floorplan above)

I can't believe you even have to ask me such a question. What self respecting comic book store would not want to be involved in the largest comic themed convention in Canada. What makes it so big is that it doesn't just focus on comics, but features horror, anime and science fiction as well. And this year's show has moved back up to the North building, which as everyone knows is above ground level and looks out over Front street. So say hello to natural light and goodbye to the feelings of claustrophobia that you may have felt in previous years.

Come check out my booth, I'll have tables full of bargain paperbacks and hardcovers, as well as a great selection of full priced books like the Omnibus collections and DC Absolute editions.
Boxes full of single issue comics priced at $2.00 and less, for those of you looking to fill in a few gaps in your collection, will be on hand too. Somehow I will even find the room for all those statues and busts that I don't have room to display all at once in the store.

Don't worry if you can't make it down, the store will still be up and running as usual, although with slightly shortened hours. The store will be closing at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday August 26th-27th, so be sure to shop early those days.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 25TH

Well it looks a little busier this week, but still not what we usually get at the end of the month.Then again, there's a holiday weekend coming up, and they love to pack the shelves for holidays.
Most of the #1's this week are pretty self-explanatory, Spider-Girl the End is another attempt to cancel her book, Namor the First Mutant(not counting Apocalypse and Sinister I suppose).Shadowland Moon Knight is the Daredevil crossover issue for this week,and X-Men the Curse gives us 2 X-over issues in their vampire storyline.
Guarding the Globe is a spin-off from Invincible(good idea shipping it the same time as Invincible #74).
And don't forget to come down and check out The Comics & More booth at the FANEXPO next weekend. AUGUST 27-29th.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 18th

Well, it looks like another fairly quite week.
We finally get a new issue of Buffy, even if it is a one-shot special.
Speaking of late books, DC finally ships the 50th and last issue of Ex Machina. Another great title that I'll be sad to see end.
The Boys spins-off a mini for our favourite wee laddie.
The Shadowland event gives us 2 more minis, with 3 issues devoted to Misty and Colleen(yay), and 4 issues to set up the new Power Man(meh).
I know the vampire thing is being overdone right now, but, Ides of Blood sounds original at least, as we get to see how the Roman empire would have fared with blood sucking slave labour.
The Phantom is a classic character that has been published by nearly every company over the decades. Now its Dynamites turn, as they start The Last Phantom.
Phoenix Without Ashes, is NOT a Marvel comic. Its a new Harlan Ellison title, featuring a mystery and the end of the world in the year 2785, you know, typical Ellison stuff.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY-AUGUST 11th

The dollar comic "first" issue idea seems to work, so the publishers keep doing them. This week, Dark Horse goes all the way back to Sin City and Aliens VS. Predator for theirs, and IDW gives us the start of the Locke and Key series. All good reads for a buck and great intros to the collections. Also for a buck, a new Dungeons and Dragons comic starts off with a #0 trial issue.
The Green Lanterns spin-off another title, with Emerald Warriors, focusing on Guy. And remember when the Ultimate Comics Avengers titles always shipped late? Well now they barely end one series, when the next begins. The idea it seems is that each "chapter" spends 5-6 issues introducing a "new" Ultimates version of a regular Marvel character. Volume 3 gives us Ultimate Blade, because ,you know no one else is doing vampire stuff right now.
The Shadowland crossover continues to move fast, but as chapters start to arrive twice a week, will interest slow down? Make sure to get the Daredevil issue as well as the first issue of Blood on the Streets.
And HEY! There's a new book to add to your kids Bone collection, Bone Tall Tales. Originally released years back in B&W as Stupid Rat Tales, this new volume will be coloured and sized to fit with the rest of the Bone volumes. Its mostly stories from before the Bones arrived in the valley and is centered around characters like the Rat creatures(who are just as stupid as always).

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY - AUGUST 4th

Big week with a great mix for once. Nothing really major though. Baltimore Plague Ships is a vampire in WW2 story by Mignola, based on his novel. Not a Hellboy story, but of interest to Hellboy fans.
Hey look, Deadpool has made it to #1000. Actually its easy to do when you have 10-20 comics a month named after you.
Shadowland #1 started off the crossover slow, but interest has picked up and the Shadowland Bulleseye one-shot should move quick.
DC hasn't abondoned the Elseworlds tales apparently, as Last Family of Krypton, brings classic writer Cary Bates back to do a What IF? style story where Superman didn't come to Earth alone.

Not to be confused with the classic, a new Marvel Universe VS. the Punisher basically sounds like a spin-off from Marvel Zombies, as Frank stands alone against a world full of super powered cannibals.

Paul Cornell must have had the Spitfire spin-off ready back before Capt Britain ended. It seems to continue plot elements with her and Blade hunting down vampires. Not sure if it will possibly connect to current storylines running through the X-Men titles.

IMPROV

I've always been a fan of the comedy improv style of theatre. Its just that it's the kind of thing that is only really good with a solid cast of performers.
Well the Bad Dog theatre group are just such people. I attended their recent super-hero themed show and was hugely entertained. The quick-witted lively cast kept a small room of people laughing for an hour and a half, and at the bargain price of only $10.00.
Part-time staffer and gaming guy Glenn was on hand as well and has this to say.


"Went last night to see Secret Origin (again) at Bad Dog Theatre

I saw the first show and this, the fourth and, sadly, final

How do you review the performance of a show that is only consistent in being inconsistent?

Well, let's try

First off, I do not have to worry about spoilers, as every show is entirely
dependent on a few words randomly shouted out from the audience (I declined to participate this time because my word was used last time. Gotta be fair and share the wealth!)

This show was funny as hell and featured a story about a supercar driver, his dim-witted friend, a villain who wanted to be fluffy and respected, an unusual
origin story, penguins getting punched, an unusual hiding place and the value of an
incompetent but really positive sidekick. Also staplers, but I digress...
I have seen a few shows now from the troupe at Bad Dog and I am impressed by the
chemistry of the players, their ability to mix in very disparate elements on the fly
and their sound effects guy. I can honestly say I would not expect most sound guys
to have some of the sounds he used!
Although the run is over, they did mention that they might do something like this
again. I hope so. And if they do, Justice.. I mean I will be there! "

I concur Glenn, a great show at a great price.

The Bad Dog Theatre is located at 138 Danforth Ave., just around the corner from the Broadview Subway station. Its a smallish place, the main room seems to seat about 50-60, but this adds to the personal audience participation feel that fuels the Improv style.
They are registered as a not for profit organization and accept tax-exempt donations.
They are a fun original group that adds real diversity to the Danforth, and are very deserving of support.

NEW COMICS WEDNESDAY- JULY 28th

Another busy week to wrap up the month.
Lots of Bat-titles especially. Kevin Smith finally finds the time to finish Batman Widening Gyre, so DC ships it the same day as Return of Bruce Wayne, to make sure we don't miss it. Also running late, First Wave #3 makes its appearance as well.
Marvel's Ultimate Comics line continues its trilogy of mini-series with Ultimate Mystery.
Big book of the week though is not Marvel or DC, its Archie. The saga of Archies future as a married man continues in a new magazine, titled, Life With Archie: Married Life. Its a strange format for Archie comics best known for their digests, but the magazine will give us a flip-book view of both of Archies futures as on one side he's married to Betty and the other side is his Veronica story.
And Walking Dead vol. 12 is finally here. If you think Scott Pilgrim sold fast this week, wait till you see how quick Walking Dead can move.
