On the Shelves MAY 2nd

Marvel seems to be trying to take advantage of the Buffymania that has developed around the new season eight series from Dark Horse. The regular schedule for Runaways puts it out the same week as Buffy each month, and now this week the oft delayed Astonishing X-men #21 will arrive as well, making it a Joss Whedon heavy week. Many Whedon fans were already picking up Astonishing but I haven't seen many of them express interest in Runaways, YET!.

Probably the biggest book of the week will be the World War Hulk Prologue, Peter David pens the story of Hulks return to earth, as he recollects memories of past run-ins with the heroes of the Marvel Universe, building his anger to epic proportions.

Hellboy Darkness Calls#1 is the latest mini-series from Mignola and Fegredo and is a follow up to the Island from 2005.

The year really flew by didn't it, 52#52 ships this week with an extra sized issue to wrap up as many of the storylines as they can, and lead into the next year long series, Countdown.

Free Comic Day Nears

Wow, I don't think I've ever been this tired after a Wednesday delivery. It would have been a big week anyway what with the latest issue of Previews and Wizard arriving together, but big hardcover items like the Spiderman omnibus and The Overstreet Price Guide PLUS the Free Comic day stuff, helped tip the scales past the ton mark. YES! I said a TON ( 2,000 pounds) of comics! That's how much 11,000 comics weigh. I really need to thank Sean and Rob for their invaluable help getting that mess all sorted and packed away in the basement, without them I would've opened a lot more than a half hour late.

I can't stress enough the importance of Free Comic Book Day. This isn't just an opportunity for you regular comic readers to score some bonus reading ( although that's great too). This is a day to reach out to the public and say, "Hey look how cool this stuff is, I'm not a nerd just because I enjoy pictures with my reading" Teachers and parents are coming on board in droves as they see the benefits to the comic format when it comes to reluctant readers.
There are more than 40 different "FREE" comics available this year, but at Comics & More, I ordered heaviest on the kid friendly ones. Books like Sonic and Marvel Adventures and Mickey Mouse will appeal to even the pre-school crowd and could help be their first memories of the written word some day. And don't forget the Spiderman comic, an all-new story by Phil Jimenez. With Spiderman 3 opening next weekend this one will be a quick mover.

The Dude

I still can't believe I was talking with Steve Rude today. The artist extraordinaire who brought us the Moth and Nexus was calling to thank me for being one of the top 10 stores to order the Nexus Free Comic Day Special.

On the one hand I'm glad to help promote the relaunch of one of comicdoms classic characters, on the other hand, I can't believe only 9 stores across North America ordered as heavy on this book as I did. As a personal thank-you, The Dude told me to keep an eye on my mail for a special reward package he was sending me.

I'm not sure exactly what will be included in this gift basket, but my good fortune is yours as well. I can't hold a successful Free Comic Day without all my loyal customers, and I know many of you fondly remember the great Horatio Hellpop,Dave,Judah, and Sundra as much as I. Therefore any customers who order the Nexus Special from my on-line shop by May 6th will be entered in a draw for something neat,(I'll let you know what, when I get it).

Fan Appreciation Convention

Comics & More will be attending the convention this weekend, April 13th-15th. Due to this fact store hours may be disrupted, most likely I will be closed early on Friday.
I could also use some help with loading and unloading at the show, so any members or regular customers who have Friday free, give me a call or talk to me in store Wednesday-Thursday.

On the Shelves - APRIL 11th

Yes All-star Superman #7 is finally showing up, maybe DC was just waiting for the hardcover reprint of the first 6 issues so they could arrive on the same day. DC seems to be doing that a lot lately , where a reprint volume shows up the same day as the latest issue of the regular series.

The cover to 52 Week #49 looks great, a cool retro "Bond" looking image, the mini-Metal Men deserve a mini-series. This series is wrapping up nicely and leaves me excited for World War III.

Frazetta fans get to see another Death Dealer #1, the last time this title was done was for the short lived Verotik comics, quite a few years ago. Lets hope for a longer run this time.

Marvel has a few "new" books this week, none of which are really new. Nova #1 is probably the 3rd or 4th time around for this character, and The Loners #1 is a spin-off from the Runaways.

The book to watch for this week is Punisher war Journal #6, Frank is set to adopt a new look in #7 and we should get a look at it by the end of this issue.
